DMV Question BankHow to Pass the New Jersey NJ MVC Permit Test (2026)
Before driving the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, Jersey Shore routes, or busy local streets in Newark, Jersey City, and Trenton, you must understand the Garden State rules that appear on the MVC knowledge test. The official exam contains 50 multiple-choice questions, and you need 40 correct answers (80%) to pass. That leaves room for only 10 mistakes, so broad “common sense” driving knowledge is not enough.
New Jersey questions place special emphasis on the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program. Know the difference between a special learner permit, examination permit, probationary license, and basic license. For GDL drivers under 21, memorize the 11:01 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. curfew, passenger restriction, complete ban on handheld and hands-free interactive wireless devices, and Kyleigh’s Law requirement for red decals on both license plates. Permit holders must also understand supervised-driving requirements, including 50 practice hours with 10 at night.
The exam also rewards precise knowledge of New Jersey road rules: stop at least 25 feet from a school bus displaying flashing red lights; distinguish that rule from the special procedure for a frozen dessert truck; learn the default 25/35/50 mph speed limits; recognize jughandle instructions; and know when to yield at traffic circles, intersections, and crosswalks. Review headlights-with-wipers, snow-and-ice removal, the three-second-plus following rule, BAC thresholds, implied consent, DUI surcharges, and ignition-interlock rules.
Build your preparation around five focused domains instead of taking random quizzes. Start with NJ GDL and permit rules, master road signs and signals, drill alcohol and drug laws, practice New Jersey traffic laws and right-of-way, and finish with defensive driving, weather and emergencies. Then take the realistic 50-question NJ MVC simulator, read the New Jersey MVC Handbook Summary, and use the official New Jersey Driver Manual to close any remaining gaps.
